He is up for:
Artist of the Year
Favourite Pop/Rock Male Artist
Favourite Pop/Rock Album
Favourite Soul/R&B Album (for ‘Number Ones’)
Favourite Soul/R&B Artist
He is up against Kings Of Leon, Taylor Swift, Lady GaGa and Eminem in the artist of the year category. The winners will be decided by fan votes – with voting open on the site now. The results will be announced on November 22.
The singer last released an album of new material, ‘Invincible’, in 2001.
Now some are asking how this is possible considering the last album MJ released with Invincible in 2001. Well, the American Music Awards are based on sales and radio data from Nielsen and everyone knows MJ’s albums are selling like hot cakes.
If reflecting the current sales landscape is purely the objective, then the American Music Awards succeeded at representing what is selling.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on 22 November. The event will be televised on America’s ABC network.
The awards will be determined by an online vote by fans, while the nominees were selected through a measurement combining sales and radio airplay.
What Has MJ Won in the Past
Jackson remains the solo artist who has amassed the most AMAs – 20 to date, including an award for artist of the century.
In 1983, he won eight gongs at a single ceremony in the wake of his Thriller album, a feat equalled by Whitney Houston a decade later.
One of the singer’s more recent accolades came in 2001 when he was inducted as a solo artist into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
His other career honours include 13 Grammy awards.
